Cut...

Quite often the cut of a diamond is confused with its shape. The cut of a diamond refers to its proportions. For example round brilliant diamonds are commonly cut with 58 facets. The better proportioned these facets are on the diamond, the more light will be reflected back through the top of the stone, resulting in brilliance and fire. This is extremely important. When cut properly, the diamond will sparkle more.

Diamonds that are cut too deep to too shallow lose and leak light through the side and bottom, resulting in less brilliance and therefore value.
